Welcome to our house which is the Bell

I believe I've got to grips with as much of Mr. Habermas' theory of Öffentlicheit as ever I'm going to, and am currently engaged in preparing my presentation for tomorrow. Have to make sure I have plenty of long words in there. In order to speak interlechurlee, dontcha know. Seriously though, it's heavy stuff, but very intelligent and can be applied thoughtfully to questions about Roman society, particularly in considering both the causes and consequences of the shift from Republic to Empire. I am mostly glad that it got less dense after the opening chapter, though there is still a lot to unpack in almost every sentence.

Good Omens was very, very good. Of course, I expected nothing less from Pratchett and Gaiman. It was actually very reminiscent of Robert Rankin. I wonder if that was an effect of Gaimain on Pratchett, or of Pratchett contextualising his brand of humour in the 'real' world. We shall likely never know.

Tomorrow I must test my students' understand of the gerund, that most intimate creature of the grammatical jungle. Hopefully they are by now well equipped for its safe and humane capture.
