Way behind on Dr. Sketchy’s material, so I figured I’d take advantage of last night’s session as an excuse to post a couple of older ones too. First, this week’s fruits:

The drawing challenge this week was to imagine the model as a fallen angel, which essentially amounted to adding wings to her couture. Some other fella one, but here’s my response:

And now some stuff from older sessions. Here is a sketch from 004:

And one from 005. There was both a female and a male model that night, and the drawing challenge entailed them swapping out halfway through the pose. Here is the result:

I was inspired by Paul Pope’s philosophical waxings on ‘design containers’ (via Warren Ellis).
This made me chuckle, and I don’t even think you have to know the song it’s based on to enjoy it (via Metalsucks).
And this struck me dumb with both its beauty and my relative weakness in the Force.

Say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it’s an ethos.

I’ve never done one of these post-Con swag pictures before, so this is truly a momentous occasion!

Highlights so far include Nathan Fox’s sketchbook and Becky Cloonan’s Minis, plus the news that Richard Starkings is reprinting the Sleeze Brothers (and his patience with my childhood reminiscences). Surprise finds were Kevin Cannon’s Far Arden and Enrico Casarosa’s The Venice Chronicles, but I have yet to really pay either of them the attention they deserve. Also looking forward to cracking into Carl: the Cat That Makes Peanut Butter Sandwiches by Jim Mahfood. Also scored some sweet Black Metal art by Chuck BB, and a few other bits and bobs I might show later.

Between moving apartments and Comic Con, I’ve fallen a little behind here. I decided to consolidate some of the intervening output into this one post, starting with some drawings from the last Dr. Sketchy’s Los Angeles:

Sash, the other model for the evening passed out fairly early on into the proceedings (!), so members of the audience stepped up to fill her shoes for the remainder of the evening:

The evening finished with a one hour pose by Jennifer. I had been sitting quite close to the stage the whole night, a circumstance I blame for some of the problems I had with proportions, but one which resulted in a foreshortening effect on this sketch with which I was quite pleased:

In San Diego I went to Drink and Draw on Thursday, where by a curious coincidence the organizers had booked Jennifer to model again, this time in a more devilish costume:

I also engaged in some non-figure drawing whilst sipping my Black and Tan:

Lefty Joe has posted some photos from the evening.

I also went to Molly Crabapple’s Comic Con Dr Sketchy’s on Friday, but the tallboy and shot I had there rather knocked me on my arse after a day on the floor, and I don’t think any of my sketches are polished enough to be worth showing. I could go on about how all the artists I met and heard talk in panels both awed and inspired me, but perhaps that is best left for another time.

Lisl spied this new mural dedicated to Silverlake’s famous Walking Man (who is actually a doctor) on one of her walks to the yoga studio. The other day I accompanied her on one such jaunt to snap and stitch this photo of it. Yes, he really is that tan. It’s on Sunset Blvd, just West of Silverlake and the Silversun plaza (here), if you’re interested in checking out the real thing for yourself.

The Silverlake Walking Man also appears as one small part of the mural decorating Micheltorena Elementary School, further West on Sunset, so he must be understood as the meta-motif, uniting not just the representative scheme of this one mural, but (soon) ALL murals…
